The Birthrate of Magnetars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Magnetars, neutron stars with ultra strong magnetic fields (B ∼ 10−10G), manifest their exotic nature in the form of soft gamma-ray repeaters and anomalous X-ray pulsars. This study estimates the birthrate of magnetars to be ∼ 0.22 per century with a galactic population comprising of ∼17 objects. A population synthesis was carried out based on the five anomalous X-ray pulsars detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey by comparing their number to that of massive OB stars in a well defined volume. Additionally, the group of seven X-ray dim isolated neutron stars detected in the same survey were found to have a birthrate of ∼ 2 per century with a galactic population of ∼ 22,000 objects.

A tale of two populations: Rotating Radio Transients and X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars
We highlight similarities between recently discovered Rotating Radio Transients and X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars. In particular, it is shown that X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars have a birthrate comparable to that of Rotating Radio Transients. On the contrary, magnetars have too low a formation rate to account for the bulk of the radio transient population. The consequences of the recent d...
متن کاملDifferent Magnetic Field Distributions in Deformed Neutron Stars
In this work, we review the formalism which would allow us to model magnetically deformed neutron stars. We study the effect of different magnetic field configurations on the equation of state (EoS) and the structure of such stars. For this aim, the EoS of magnetars is acquired by using the lowest order constraint variational (LOCV) method and employing the AV18 potential....
متن کاملMagnetars and Pulsars: a Missing Link
There is growing evidence that soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) are isolated neutron stars with superstrong magnetic fields, i.e., magnetars, marking them a distinguished species from the conventional species of spindown-powered isolated neutron stars, i.e., radio pulsars. The current arguments in favor of the magnetar interpretation of SGR/AXP phenomenology wi...
متن کاملHigh Energy Neutrinos from Magnetars
Magnetars can accelerate cosmic rays to high energies through the unipolar effect, and are also copious soft photon emitters. We show that young, fast-rotating magnetars whose spin and magnetic moment point in opposite directions emit high energy neutrinos from their polar caps through photomeson interactions. We identify a neutrino cut-off band in the magnetar period-magnetic field strength ph...
متن کاملA Search for New Galactic Magnetars in Archival Chandra and Xmm-newton Observations
We present constraints on the number of Galactic magnetars, which we have established by searching for sources with periodic variability in 506 archival Chandra observations and 441 archival XMMNewton observations of the Galactic plane (|b|<5◦). Our search revealed four sources with periodic variability on time scales of 200–5000 s, all of which are probably accreting white dwarfs. We identify ...
